BBQ

No home in Australia (I would also add the UK) is complete without the outside cooking device called the BBQ or Barbie. It was one of the first things we bought once we had our rental sorted. I went for a Beefmaster from www.barbequesgalore.com.au/ but if I had my money back I would look for a couple of things a bit different next time. Dont get me wrong it is a brilliant BBQ and ticks almost all the boxes except for the following:

  1. Viewing Window, it would be fantastic to see how food was doing when I have the hood down.

Sun Protection in Australia

I was soaking up the sun rays by the beach when an elderly gentleman asked me where my hat was, he then proceeded to lift his cap off and show me that he had 3 melanomas removed from the top of his head.  It didn’t look pretty.

Being very fair skinned myself with freckles and moles galore I decided to visit a specialist.  During my teens and early twenties I, like lots of people did a lot of sunbathing.  Although the tan looked good then, you can now seen the sun damage I have done to my skin – its is very aging!. The sun damages the DNA in your skin cells which can lead to development of cancerous cells. Your skin becomes less elastic and can lead to more facial lines and the lovely brown age spots!

Brisbane Queensland weather

Autumn is shaping up to be my favourite month weather wise in Queensland. Autumn is from March to May in Brisbane with a mean temperature of 21.10 degrees Celsius. Mostly it has been lovely blue skies, bright sunshine, no rain and a lovely temperature ;-)

Winter starts next month in June and runs to August with an average temperature of about 15 degrees during this season. The days are lovely and fresh but it does get very cold at night.  We have found the Queensland houses are very drafty. This is good to get any cool breezes through the house in the summer but in the winter it is definately a case of getting the rugs out.

Initial Job Searching

Welcome, to follow is a post on how I started an initial search for jobs in Australia while in the UK (England).

One of the things that worried me about moving to Australia from England was that I would be arriving in a new country with no knowledge of how the job market was and how my CV should be presented.

So what did I do? I did my CV as I would have completed it for a job in England.

Securing your rental in Australia

For renting we used  www.domain.com.au.  We set up an alert which will email new rentals daily as they are listed.  We also visited local estate agents which publish weekly lists of their rentals.  Definately worth checking out the location and look of the property before booking a viewing.  Viewings tend to be grouped together so there could be lots of you looking round together.  Beware Cheap rentals are usually cheap for a reason! There was an amazing disparity between rentals – some were spotless and some absolutely disgusting!
